Deaf Sign Language Users –
A Chance to Give Your Views on Telephone Video Relay
Sign language interviews –
21 March 2006, 4-7pm,
at City University, central London
City University is researching telephone video relay services for deaf people who use sign language. Ofcom, the communications regulator, has asked City University to find out how popular video relay services might be.
Some small-scale video relay services have recently been set up. So sign language users can communicate with hearing people via video telephone links and a sign language relay interpreter. It is like the existing text relay service (RNID Typetalk) but instead of the deaf person typing a message they can sign.
The City University researchers are studying all aspects of video relay and especially want to hear the views of deaf sign language users.
The researchers are also looking at the possibility of other new additional types of telephone relay services for hard of hearing people and speech-impaired users.
For more information see the research website – www.addrelay.co.uk – has details in BSL, also at the SignPost website, www.signpostbsl.com/news/signpost .
